Logan was diagnosed with ADHD a few years ago. We initially had him tested because his grades were always very low, even when he tried his best. His teachers would often email to let us know that Logan was not completing assignments and seemed very distant in class. We tried several different medications, as many do with ADHD, and nothing seemed to be helping; one would keep him up all night; the other would cause stomach cramps; the next would cause loss of appetite. So we opted to just try and succeed without it.
However, no matter how hard he tried, he just couldn’t catch up. He was beginning to feel so defeated. He would often ask me, “Why am I like this? It’s so easy for other kids.” I would tell him, “Logan, God made you who you are. You are very valuable to him, and He has a plan for you.” But, his grades continued on a downward spiral, as well as his well-being. He was becoming more closed off and seemed very unhappy. We knew then that we had to do something. So we took a leap of faith and transferred him to Hartfield in September 2016.
We were introduced to Learning Strategies through the REACH Program and decided to give it a try. Within the first few weeks, his grades improved drastically! The Learning Strategies class is helping Logan to become more organized, and provides him with an individual learning plan that helps him stay on track. This has helped him so much, because with his ADHD, he would in the past just shut down if he became too overwhelmed. This hasn’t happened since joining the Learning Strategies class! The class has helped me, as a parent, mainly because of the peace of mind I have now, knowing that Logan is getting the help he needs and seeing a smile on his face all the time! God is so good!
The testing accommodations offered through Learning Strategies have made all the difference in Logan’s success at Hartfield. He has always had test anxiety, and because of the ADHD, has trouble focusing on a test in a classroom with other students. He now gets pulled from the classroom to test in a small room with just him and a proctor. He says it doesn’t bother him at all to pulled from class to test because it really helps him to do better. It’s given him a sense of self-worth, inner peace, and joy!
I would highly recommend Learning Strategies and testing accommodations through the REACH program to any family who has a child that suffers from any type of learning difference, whether it be ADHD, Dyslexia, etc. I am convinced that the class and testing accommodations are the reason for Logan’s success, and for his happiness! John 15:16 says, “I chose you. I wanted you. I appointed you. I set you where you are.” We are so thankful for God’s plan for Logan’s life and that Hartfield and Learning Strategies was part of that plan!
Our son, Thomas, was diagnosed with ADHD in the third grade. We recognized from early on that he struggled with reading comprehension and being able to focus in a traditional classroom setting.
His Junior year, we enrolled Thomas in Hartfield’s REACH program. REACH has a mission of supporting students with learning differences to help them reach their full potential in a college preparatory school. The program recognizes each child as an individual, and they partnered with us to discover what accommodations would best serve Thomas’ academic needs.
Upon starting REACH, we immediately began seeing positive results reflected in Thomas’ grades. He was also able to participate in the Learning Strategies class where his instructor pushed him academically, guided him on how to be organized, and helped him set goals. My husband and I could measure results not only by his markedly improved grades, but also by watching Thomas’ confidence grow. This is Thomas’ Senior year, and he is looking forward to a great year, including academically!
