Hartfield Academy 1st Graders Learn About Jesus Through Pumpkin Carving
This week, Hartfield Academy's 1st graders participated in a unique and meaningful fall activity that combined the fun of pumpkin carving with a lesson about Jesus. As part of their activity, the students gathered on the carpet to carve a class pumpkin, but more than just having a fun activity, students learned about how Jesus made them.
Teachers began with a question: "How is a Christian like a pumpkin?" Through the pumpkin activity, students learned that, just as a pumpkin is chosen from the patch, cleaned, and carved, so too are believers chosen by God, cleansed of their sins, and filled with His light to shine in the world.
As the class began to carve their pumpkin, the students were reminded that, like pumpkins, they have an outer appearance and an inner soul. The teacher explained that while the outside of a pumpkin might look perfect, the inside can be filled with "yucky stuff"—a metaphor for the seeds of doubt, hate, and greed that can fill a person's heart. The carving process symbolized God’s transformative work in their lives.
The students’ favorite part came when they placed lights inside their pumpkins. This simple act was a reminder of Jesus’ words in John 8:12: "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." The glowing pumpkins illustrated how, when Jesus is in their hearts, they can shine brightly, spreading kindness and love to those around them.
The activity ended with a prayer:
Dear God, Open my mind so I can learn about You;
Take away all my sin and forgive me for the wrong things I do.
Open my eyes so Your love I will see;
I'm so sorry for turning up my nose to all you've given me.
Open my ears so your word I will hear.
Open my mouth so I can tell others You're near
Let Your light shine in all I say and do! Amen.
This activity not only allowed the students to enjoy a fun seasonal tradition but also helped them understand how we can live for Jesus. Hartfield is truly a special place to learn!
