Levi Hill and Stacie Ownby: STAR Student & Teacher
Hartfield Academy is proud to announce Levi Hill as the STAR Student for the 2025-26 academic year. This distinguished honor, presented through the Mississippi Economic Council’s Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) program, celebrates students across the state who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement and leadership. Alongside this recognition, Levi selected Upper School English Instructor Mrs. Stacie Ownby, as his STAR Teacher.
Since its inception in 1965, the STAR program has highlighted the important role educators play in shaping Mississippi’s brightest students. Levi’s selection as Hartfield’s STAR Student is a reflection of years of perseverance, excellence, and growth.
"Being named Hartfield's STAR student is an amazing accomplishment," Levi shared. "It is the culmination of years of hard work and dedication."
Levi chose Mrs. Ownby as his STAR Teacher, a decision made by being under her instruction for three years. "She is incredibly kind and passionate about her students," he said. "She wants her students to succeed and strives to help others see their potential that they may not see. She always has a smile on her face and makes learning about literature enjoyable and thought-provoking." He also expressed gratitude for the extra time she gives, such as founding Hartfield’s book club to deepen students’ love for reading.
Reflecting on her time with Levi, Mrs. Ownby said, “In one word, I would describe Levi as brilliant. I have had the honor of being his English teacher since he was in 10th grade. I have watched him mature intellectually, socially, and emotionally. He strives to do his best and pursues knowledge. He is a true scholar. That’s something that a teacher really appreciates.”
Being chosen by Levi as his STAR Teacher brought deep meaning to Mrs. Ownby. “I was so touched by this acknowledgment that tears came to my eyes when I was told. I truly appreciate Levi as a student, and I am blessed to have had a part in his education.”
Now in her thirty-first year of teaching, Mrs. Ownby still finds joy in the everyday moments. “I love when the students understand my expectations and do what they are supposed to do without being asked. But I think my favorite part is when a student says they enjoyed the lesson or learned something. That makes me feel like I’ve had a tiny part in their growth.”
When asked about his favorite part of being a Hartfield student, Levi shared, “There are plenty of teachers who genuinely care about the well-being of their students. They provide deep, in-depth conversations and put in the effort to see our growth.”
Both Levi and Mrs. Ownby serve as wonderful representatives of the school's commitment to academic achievement! Congratulations to you both!
