Hartfield Academy Students Explore Culture in the Czech Republic
A group of students from Hartfield Academy recently embarked on a life-changing experience to the Czech Republic as part of our Worldview and Culture Exchange Program, an initiative designed to broaden students’ perspectives through immersive international experiences. This is an opportunity for students to see firsthand what God is doing all over the world. Partnering with a Christian school in the Czech Republic, the Hartfield students engaged in local classes, shared their own perspectives, and explored iconic European landmarks for ten days.
This cultural exchange began in Prague, where students strolled across the Charles Bridge, explored Prague Castles, and spent time at Old Town Square. With each experience, students dove into Czech history and developed a new appreciation for global perspectives. One highlight of the trip was a visit to the Czech Parliament, where students had lunch with Senator Levko, discussing current issues and reflecting on the similarities and differences between Czech and American culture.
The students rode Prague’s Metro daily, allowing them to interact with locals and experience the daily European life. Through this journey, Hartfield students deepened their understanding of the world, and some even saw it as an opportunity to spread their faith. Charlotte Oates, a junior on the trip, shared an impactful moment on the Metro when she and two students discussed faith with a Czech student. “We were talking to a student who asked us why we were believers,” she said. “After a long discussion about faith, God, and the Bible, Memphis offered to give her his Bible, which really excited her. It was amazing to witness her interest in our faith.”
The visit to a Moravian church was also a memorable experience for Charlotte. “Though there was a language barrier, everyone praying, worshiping, and talking about God strengthened my faith,” she said. This exchange was about more than seeing new places; it was about understanding and experiencing God’s work in other parts of the world.
For Charlotte, the cultural differences added to the excitement of the exchange. Observing how local schools and communities operate differently from her own, she noted how “teachers would come to the students instead of students switching classrooms.” Other aspects of Czech life surprised her too, like the convenience of public transportation.
Reflecting on her trip, Charlotte challenged future students to participate in the program. “Absolutely, 100% go, even if you don’t know anyone on the trip. It is a life-changing experience,” she said, adding that she learned not only about the Czech culture but also valuable life skills like currency exchange and cross-cultural communication.
This exchange program will continue in the spring when Hartfield will host Czech students on campus. This experience has not only expanded students’ worldviews but has prepared them for future challenges by deepening their faith and building lasting friendships.
Hartfield Academy is fully accredited by both the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), the MidSouth Association of Independent Schools (MAIS), the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) and the Southern Association of independent Schools (SAIS).
